![## The Passing of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): The Final Days, Last Advice, and Dawn of Loss Have you ever wondered how the final moments unfolded for the man who brought light, mercy, and guidance to billions of human hearts? How did the Final Messenger of God prepare his companions for his departure, and what were the very last words to leave his blessed lips? When Muslims look for the ultimate lesson in emotional resilience, reliance on Allah alone, and prioritizing worship until the last breath, they turn to the moving narrative of the **passing (*Wafat*) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)**. His death was not merely the loss of a leader; it marked the end of Divine Revelation (*Wahy*) coming down from the heavens. Yet, in his final days, he left his nation with an eternal roadmap to navigate every trial until the Day of Judgment. --- ## The Prelude: Farewell Pilgrimage (*Hajjat al-Wada'*) Months before his passing in **10 AH (632 CE)**, signs began to signal that the Prophet’s noble mission was nearing completion. During his Farewell Pilgrimage in Makkah, attended by over 100,000 companions, Allah revealed the immortal verse confirming the completion of the faith: > **"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion."** > *(Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:3)* Standing on Mount Arafat, the Prophet (PBUH) delivered his famous Farewell Sermon, establishing human equality, women’s rights, the sanctity of life and property, and the abolition of usury (*Riba*). He looked at the vast crowd and asked: *"Have I delivered the message?"* The companions responded in unison: *"Yes!"* He then raised his finger to the sky, declaring: **"O Allah, bear witness!"** --- ## The Onset of Illness In late Safar / early Rabi' al-Awwal of **11 AH**, after returning from visiting the martyrs of Uhud and praying for the deceased in the Al-Baqi cemetery, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was struck by a severe fever and intense headaches. As his fever intensified, he requested permission from his wives to spend his remaining days in the room of **Sayyidatuna Aisha (RA)**, adjacent to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah. His loving wives unanimously agreed. ``` [ The Timeline of the Final Days ] │ ┌──────────────────────────┼──────────────────────────┐ ▼ ▼ ▼ [ Final Khutbah ] [ Abu Bakr Leads Salat ] [ The Last Breath ] Address to the Sahabah Appointing Abu Bakr (RA) Passing in Aisha's room praising Abu Bakr (RA). to lead daily congregational prayers. with "Al-Rafiq al-A'la." ``` --- ## Key Events of the Final Days ### 1. The Last Address to the Companions Despite his extreme fever, the Prophet (PBUH) tied a cloth around his head, leaned on his family members, and entered the mosque for a final public address. He praised the Ansar and Muhajirun, paid tribute to his lifelong friend **Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA)**, and stated: > *"Allah gave one of His servants the choice between the delights of this world and that which is with Him, and the servant chose that which is with Him."* Hearing these words, Abu Bakr wept silently, understanding that the Prophet (PBUH) was speaking of his own impending death. ### 2. Appointing Abu Bakr (RA) to Lead Prayer When the Prophet (PBUH) grew too weak to step into the Mihrab, he gave a firm, clear command: **"Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."** For seventeen congregational prayers during the Prophet’s illness, Abu Bakr (RA) stood in the Mihrab, signaling to the companions who should lead the nation after his passing. ### 3. The Last Look at the Ummah On Monday morning, the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, as Abu Bakr was leading the companions in Fajr prayer, the curtain of Aisha’s room was lifted. The Prophet (PBUH) looked out at his companions standing in neat rows, worshipping Allah together. His face beamed with a radiant smile like a piece of the moon, filled with joy that his lifelong work was complete. It was the last time the Sahabah saw his face alive. --- ## The Final Moments: "Al-Rafiq Al-A'la" On the morning of **Monday, 12th Rabi' al-Awwal, 11 AH**, the Prophet’s health rapidly declined. Restless in Aisha’s arms, he kept dipping his hands into a small bowl of water, wiping his face, and saying: $$\text{لا إله إلا الله، إن للموت لسكراً}$$ > **"There is no deity except Allah. Indeed, death has its agonies."** When Aisha’s brother, Abdur-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, entered the room carrying a fresh miswak (tooth-stick), Aisha noticed the Prophet looking at it. She asked if he wanted it, softened the bristles with her mouth, and gave it to him. He brushed his teeth thoroughly with his usual love for cleanliness. Aisha (RA) held him close to her chest. As his eyes raised toward the ceiling, his voice softened, and he uttered his final advice to the nation: $$\text{الصلاة الصلاة، وما ملكت أيمانكم}$$ > **"The prayer! The prayer! And those your right hands possess!"** Then, raising his index finger toward the heavens, his final words whispered across the room three times: $$\text{اللهم الرَّفِيقَ الأَعْلَى}$$ > **"O Allah, [with] the Highest Companionship."** His noble head grew heavy, his arm rested, and the purest soul to ever walk the earth returned to its Creator. --- ## The Reaction in Madinah and Abu Bakr’s Heroic Leadership News of his passing struck Madinah like a lightning bolt. Grief overwhelmed the city; people wept openly, and even a giant of courage like **Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)** was so overcome with shock that he drew his sword, unable to accept that the Messenger of Allah had died. At that critical juncture, **Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA)** arrived, entered Aisha’s room, uncovered the Prophet’s face, kissed his forehead, and wept, saying: *"How sweet you are in life and in death! By Allah, Allah will never combine two deaths upon you."* Abu Bakr then walked out to the grieving crowd in the mosque and delivered one of the most powerful speeches in Islamic history, restoring emotional and faith stability to the entire Ummah: > **"O people! Whoever among you worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead. But whoever worshipped Allah, then Allah is Alive and never dies!"** He then recited the divine verse: > **"Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed away before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to disbelief]?"** > *(Surah Ali 'Imran 3:144)* Hearing this verse, Umar (RA) said his legs could no longer hold him, and he collapsed to the ground, realizing that the Messenger of Allah had indeed departed. ``` [ The Legacy of Guidance ] │ ┌─────────────────────────┼─────────────────────────┐ ▼ ▼ ▼ [ The Two Weighty Things ] [ Priority of Salat ] [ Living the Sunnah ] Left behind the Quran and Safeguarding daily Upholding his character His authentic Sunnah. prayer above all else. and mercy in daily life. ``` --- ## Burial in the Room of Aisha (RA) The companions performed the funeral bath (*Ghusl*) for the Prophet without removing his garments, using water from a well he loved. When deciding where to bury him, Abu Bakr (RA) cited a prophetic statement: *"No prophet dies except that he is buried right where he passed away."* They lifted the bed in Aisha’s room and dug the grave beneath it. The companions entered in small groups to pray Janazah over him individually, without a single imam leading them, out of immense reverence. He was laid to rest in the soil of Madinah, leaving behind an immortal message for humanity. --- ## 5 Timeless Lessons from His Passing 1. **Mortality Applies to All:** If the most beloved creation to Allah experienced death, no human is immortal. True wisdom is preparing for what lies beyond this life. 2. **The Absolute Priority of Prayer (*Salat*):** Even as he was departing the world, his final words emphasized maintaining prayer. Salat is the direct lifeline between a believer and Allah. 3. **Islam Is Built on Monotheism, Not Personality:** Abu Bakr’s leadership proved that Islam is anchored in the eternal worship of Allah (*Al-Hayy Al-Qayyum*), not hero-worship of any human being. 4. **The Quran and Sunnah Are Our Shield:** The Prophet (PBUH) assured his nation: *"I have left among you two things; if you hold fast to them, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah."* 5. **Compassion to the Weak:** His final words included caring for the weak, workers, and those under authority, reminding leaders and employers of their moral duty. --- ## Key Facts Profile: The Passing of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) | Feature | Historical Details | | --- | --- | | **Date of Passing** | Monday, 12th Rabi' al-Awwal, 11 AH (~June 8, 632 CE) | | **Age at Death** | 63 lunar years old | | **Location** | The room of Sayyidatuna Aisha (RA) in Madinah | | **Place of Burial** | Inside Aisha's room (now within Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) | | **Final Words** | *"O Allah, [with] the Highest Companionship"* (*Allahumma Al-Rafiq Al-A'la*) | | **Key Legacy Left Behind** | The Holy Quran, Authentic Sunnah, and a unified global Ummah | --- ## FAQ Section (Perfect for Families & Students) * **Why was Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) buried in Aisha's room instead of a cemetery?** Because Prophets are buried in the exact spot where they pass away, as stated in authentic Hadith traditions quoted by Abu Bakr (RA). * **What are the "Two Weighty Things" (*Al-Thaqalayn*) he left behind?** The Holy Quran and his authentic Sunnah (teachings and traditions). * **How did Abu Bakr calm the Sahabah on the day of his passing?** By reciting Surah Ali 'Imran (3:144), reminding everyone that Muhammad (PBUH) was a human messenger and that Allah is Eternal and Ever-Living. * **What was the very last advice the Prophet gave before his soul departed?** He repeatedly urged the companions to safeguard their daily prayers (*Salat*) and treat workers and the weak with mercy and justice. * **How can we express love for the Prophet today?** By sending blessings (*Salawat*) upon him, learning his Seerah, embodying his gentle character, and following his Sunnah in daily life. --- Esraa Quran & Arabic Hub](https://esraaquranarabichub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/The-death-of-prophet-Muhammed-1024x533.jpeg)
